Lupus Alert
As the world prepares to mark the ninth World Lupus Day observance on 10 May 2012, we are pleased to inform you about the various activities organised by Lupus Alert to increase public awareness and understanding of Lupus. Activities have already started since the beginning of May:

1. College students visited the Lupus Alert Drop-In Centre / Library to learn more about Lupus and how it affects young people.
2. On Sunday 6th May an educational programme has brought together a panel of Lupus patients and their families with a team of basket ball players from the Malherbes Harlems Club to discuss the various aspects of Lupus, how it affects the daily life of a Lupus patient and how to make this painful and misunderstood disease better known to the public.
3. A basket ball match will be played between the Malherbes Harlems Basket Ball Club and players from Le Mauricia College where two students are Lupus sufferers.
4. Presentation of the World Lupus Day 2012 poster to the media. The posters are already displayed in all public hospitals, private clinics, secondary and tertiary institutions...etc
5. Several radio and tv programmes with doctors and Lupus patients have been organised.
6. A couple from Madagascar has also join the Lupus Alert team for Lupus awareness in Mauritius and Madagascar.
7. As in previous years, we have invited as many people as possible to text or email a message on the 10th of May to keep the awareness of Lupus ongoing.
8. Lupus Alert 2000 - 2012: A slide show of its activities and exceptional achievments are being shown to all visitors at the Lupus Alert Drop-In / Library Centre
9. Lupus Alert is proud to inform all Lupus Groups around the World that for her extraordinary work in disease awareness and disease advocacy Dalilah Kalla, a lupus patient from Mauritius, was awarded the 2011 Junior Chamber International Outstanding Young Person of Mauritius and is among the 2011 Junior Chamber International Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (JCI TOYP Program) recipient in the category of Humanitarian and/or Voluntary Leadership. Past recipients of these JCI National Awards include such well known personalities as Orson Welles, Howard Hughes, Nelson Rockefeller, John F.Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, and many more.

Care For Lupus – SDF Indonesia

This Year, Care For Lupus – SDF Indonesia conducts several activities for World Lupus Day 2012, which have started from November 2011 and will finally be peaked at the commemoration of World Lupus Day on May 5, 2012.

The theme for this year is NEVER GIVE UP!

The central Program lies on The Care for Lupus – SDF Awards 2012.
Under this Program, 3 Award Categories will be delivered for : Research Sponsorship, Writing Competition and Lifetime Achievement. 35 Nominees from several universitiesin Indonesia and individual submitted proposals for research sponsorship. This year in addition to the research sponsorship for herbal supplement, we add one categoty reserach “All About Lupus” to improve quality of life of lupus patients.

We will select 3 winners out 26 propasal for herbal supplement and 2 wineers out of 9 proposal for “All About Lupus “

On the Writing Competition, the committee will also select 3 winners out of 10 articles on the topic of Lupus that have been published on the media. On the Lifetime Achievement category, the committee will select individuals, doctors and institutions who have dedicated his/her/their life to support people with lupus and their families, promote public education and awareness about Lupus and strive for a call to action for government to increase their financial support for lupus research, awareness and patient services.

The other series of activities include Lupus Goes to School and Campus (for Lupus awareness and education), Lupus Road Show for Care for Lupus SDF Awards and Kids Lupus patients Gathering.

The closing of the NEVER GIVE UP - WLD 2012 activities will be a live event on May 5, 2012. The agenda for this event includes: Free medical lupus consultation; Lupus Awareness adn Education Talk show; Art Performance: “Beautiful Indonesia”; Book Launching: “Sunrise Serenade” and “Luppies Diary”; Bazaar and Care for Lupus SDF Awards Presentation.

For the first time ever, LUPUS EUROPE will be providing artwork for all 21 member countries (23 member groups) for use in WLD projects. Using the theme Make Lupus Work, the artwork consists of A3 poster with photos and status of lupus patients throughout Europe along with top-line statements taken from the on-line Survey: Living with Lupus – Career/Work Situation. An A4 poster has the same text with photos of delegates to LUPUS EUROPE Annual Convention in Copenhagen September 2011. Further artwork is 148x148 being text only. The three items will all be personalised for each member group and sent electronically as pdf. An A4 leaflet (Word) explains the project and gives suggestions for the use of the posters. A further A4 leaflet What is Lupus? Gives a brief outline of lupus for the countries which may find such information of use. The poster will be on the Home Page of LUPUS EUROPE website and member groups are requested to post it on their national and regional websites also on social networks e.g. Facebook and Twitter. See the A3 poster and text (pdf). The text could be reproduced as a postcard and sent to Lupologists, Health Ministers, MPs etc to highlight the impact that lupus can have on career/work. LUPUS EUROPE will also have a WLD page on its website where events in the member countries/groups can be highlighted. World Lupus Day will take place on 10th May itself, in hospital Gasthuisberg in Leuven. Between 11 am and 17 pm there will be members present of the CIB-league with an informationstand. We are there to answer the question of patients and visitors. We will also hand out leaflets of our illness and organisation. There is also a poster of World Lupus Day available, the meaning is to put it on a place where many people pass, or to give it to our doctor, pharmacist, ... Lupus should that day be noticed in the whole of Flanders!

Make LUPUS Work is the theme for the LUPUS EUROPE campaign for WLD 2012, as:

Lupus has life changing consequences when only 52 % are in employment. For about 28% the change happens within a year after diagnosis. Time of diagnosis is in average at 37 years of age, 9 out of ten are women.

These are some of the results from the patient-led survey Lupus European Online – LEO, bringing attention to the detrimental effect lupus has on the career/work situation of many people with lupus in Europe.

In Denmark, the World Lupus Day will focus on this important aspect of living with lupus and the programme offers topics like: Student and work life, better knowledge of own disease and how new and improved treatment options will influence education and career choices. The final topic of the day will be a presentation on a special “Know your lupus” – educational programme planned, designed and organized by the patient organization for the patients.

LUPUS DAY IN ESTONIA – „MY LIFE WITH LUPUS“

The purpose of the activities on World Lupus Day is to improve the coping of lupus patients and their family members by distributing relevant and necessary information.

We want to inform health care workers about the essence and prevalence of lupus, the progression of the disease as well as the role of family and support people as well as the existence of a support group.

We are going to issue a special edition of the Estonian Rheumatism Association monthly e-newsletter dedicated to the subject of lupus. This will include information on the risk factors and prevalence of lupus in Estonia, the 10 years of work by the lupus support group, the World Lupus Day, the seminar to be organised in the autumn, and on creative therapies for lupus patients.

In addition, we are going to issue the booklet „My Life with Lupus“. The booklet gives an overview of the essence of the disease, its diagnosing and treatment as well as offers advice for better coping with the disease.

We are going to distribute the monthly e-newsletter as well as the booklets to patients and health care workers. The electronic versions are available on out websites.

On June 23, 2012, we are planning to go to a nearby Safari Park in Budakeszi. We invite all of our family members and our friends who feel like spending together a nice and pleasant day in the nature with many talks and much experience. If the weather is gloomy and rainy, we are going to the Tropicarium zoo park in one of Budapest’s suburban district. Our aim is just to have fun together when forgetting our illness. We are preparing some tea and mineral water to everyone as usual.

Unveil and go live with their brand new interactive website. This site will have 21 individually designed pages, created by a very talented web designer exclusively for Lupus Group Ireland. This website will be interactive providing 24/7 support for Lupus Patients. There will be stories from patients and family members of patients, there will be information on symptoms, diagnosis, medications and most importantly a question forum on flash chat. The designs are one of a kind created exclusively for the Group.

We also intend to unveil our Android Application which will be downloadable from an app store and from our website. This application will be designed in a game format, it will allow people to progress further by answering Lupus related questions. This app will be an innovated, fun and new way to learn about the condition Lupus. This app will be named "Lupie".

All associations claim an increase in both public and private funds for medical research on lupus, targeted education programs to healthcare professionals, patients and the public in general and recognition of the importance of Lupus. In this sense, the University of Santiago has an open line of research on lupus via the Rheumatology Service, Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, in the Clincial Hospital of Santiago has been created a bank of blood samples of Galician patients with lupus. On the other hand in the Clinical Hospital of Coruña is conducting a study entitled "National Lupus Registry" with samples of affected patients in Coruña City

• Many schools across the UK will be holding events to promote World Lupus Day. Participating schools have been sent posters to display and a bookmark for each child that they can colour in. Hopefully the children will read their bookmark, then take it home and show it to their parents – two generations learning about lupus through one action.
• All LUPUS UK members have received posters and stickers to put on mail going through the postal system.
• Our followers on Facebook and Twitter will be changing their profile pictures to that of a Butterfly to help raise awareness in a viral campaign. The idea is to pique people’s interests and make them wonder why their friend has a butterfly on their profile. This will raise discussions about lupus.
• We will also have many members holding smaller events all across the country.
• The Spring edition of News & Views (national magazine) has given 1½ pages to promoting WLD and the Summer edition will carry articles on the ways that WLD was marked throughout the UK.

The Niagara Falls Illumination Board has approved the illumination of the American & Canadian Falls on May l0th to honour World Lupus Day.

Niagara Falls (American, Bridal Veil and the Canadian Horseshoe) will be illuminated in the Canadian lupus colours of red/white during the following times:

Illumination of Niagara Falls began 144 years ago to honour the visit of the Prince of Wales. On May l0th, the Niagara Falls Illumination Board will honour the five million people who have been diagnosed with lupus. This initiative will shed light upon the ‘least known major disease – lupus’.

Name of event : - Public Art Exhibition about Lupus
- 44º Medical Symposium Open to Community

Under the slogan: "And if is it Lupus? More you know, better you face", ALUA summons to attend next Thursday, May 10th,2012 from 7:00 a.m. to 20:00 p.m. a Public Art Exhibition about Lupus with distribution of instructional leaflets of our illness and organisation and bracelets and pins about WLD. The show will consist of a giant sculpture shaped like a butterfly (symbol of the disease in reference to one of its characteristic symptoms) and the exposure of ten murals depicting ten of the most frequent symptoms.

During the day a Power Point on the Proclamation of the WLD will be screened continuously, with images of the city of Buenos Aires and music of Astor Piazzola. From 5:00 p.m. ALUA will be hosting the 44º Medical Symposium about different aspects to Lupus especially to patients, families, medical and social workers, in a canvas tent installed in the same place,San Martin Square in Buenos Aires.

San Martin Square is the largest green pace in the neighborhood of Retiro in Buenos Aires. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1942. In this place we will meet to commemorate the WLD on 10 May.

- The World Lupus Day - May 10 has been declared of Interest by the Legislative Chamber of Deputies of Argentina
- We`ll send an informative e-card to friends and family with the WLD Flyer and Lupus information to people who do not have Lupus to help spread the message through the world.
- We are promoting World Lupus Day through our Facebook, too.
- We are also working hard with the media (T.V. porgrammes, radio, and newsletters.)

Agrupación Lupus Chile
There will be different points of diffusion and information about Lupus and our campaing to include Lupus to a special National Health Program (Plan AUGE-GES).

These points will be in these following cities around Chile:

Valparaíso (in a stand with Red Cross)
La Florida
Maipú
San Bernardo
Rancuagua
Temuco (on May, 7th)

Also, in Santiago we'll have a special stand in the downtown to make Lupus Awareness and promote our campaing to this Plan AUGE-GES.

In that point we'll be with Senator Soledad Alvear, who is a great politician figure: she is a former Minister of Wome´s Affairs, former Minister of Justice, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and former nominate presidential candidate.

And finally, in Valparaíso we'll be in the National Congress with a stand to make Lupus Awareness and promote Plan Auge-Ges with politicians.

We promoted a National Event to put our poster of World Lupus Day, and we had a positive answer from the people.Our people put these posters all around our country, from the North (Arica, the northest city) to the South (Punta Arenas, our southernmost city) in Hospitals, Universities, Colleges, stores, schools, drugstores, etc
